NEC System Technologies Introduces Software Licensing for FlexReaderWriter,
an RFID Management System for Reading and Writing RFID Tags
Utilizing Various Frequencies and Protocols

- RFID to be implemented and operated at low cost, with management of large numbers of RFID reader/writers made easier -

June 28, 2006-NEC System Technologies, Ltd. announced today the sale of FlexReaderWriter, an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) management system consisting of RFID reader/writers that allows for both reading and writing a variety of RFID tags utilizing various frequencies and protocols, as well as for server software that comprehensively manages RFID reader/writers.

RFID technology distinguishes items or people by attaching tags to them. Tag data is written or read using radio waves, thus allowing for the management of products, process and distribution flows. As a new medium symbolizing the ubiquitous age, this technology is expected to support many applications. However, in the market, such as hospitals, supermarkets and convenience stores, there are many different products and types of equipment with a variety of RFID tags flowing in and out. For each type of tag, a reader/writer corresponding to that specific type is required. This has been identified as an issue preventing the technology from diffusing further, since selecting the appropriate reader/writers for each tag is cumbersome and the cost of storing different reader/writers in addition to operations and maintenance for replacement becomes quite significant.

Responding to this issue, NEC System Technologies has developed a reader/writer that accommodates a variety of RFID tags utilizing various frequencies and protocols by simply interchanging the software aspect of the device. This was made possible by detaching the part of the system inside the RFID reader/writer that differs for each tag and re-engineering it as software. The server stores a variety of software that responds to different types of RFID tags; then, depending on the specifications of the reader/writer in the field, the appropriate software is downloaded. This allows for the reader/writer specifications to be customized. Additionally, since the reader/writers are centrally controlled by the server via LAN, the central operator can respond quickly to changes, including additions and changes to tags. As presented, FlexReaderWriter solves the fundamental problem in large-scale operation of RFID technology.
