
Business Design Laboratory, NEC System Technologies, and Futaba Industrial Collaborate on Development of Character Robot That Can Enjoy Communicating with People

July 12, 2004-Business Design Laboratory Co., Ltd. announced today that it has collaborated with NEC System Technologies, Ltd. and Futaba Industrial Co., Ltd on the development of a new communication robot called "Hello Kitty ROBO" (tentative name). "Hello Kitty" of Sanrio Co., Ltd has been adopted as its character. The company announced that it has completed the development of a prototype.
For the development of "Hello Kitty ROBO", Business Design Laboratory adopted "RoboStudio", a robot development software tool provided by NEC System Technologies. Business Design Laboratory has included elaborate advanced recognition features for voices and images (faces), and has also developed the scenario to make the robot to behave like Hello Kitty. NEC System Technologies provided "RoboStudio", consultation, and technical support for the effective development scenarios and creative content for the realization of smooth robot movement.
Futaba Industrial will manufacture "Hello Kitty ROBO". Futaba Industrial has a track record of developing mass production models of the world's first commercial sensitive communication robot "ifbot" developed by Business Design Laboratory in cooperation with academia. Futaba Industrial manufactured "ifbot" and made shipment last April. The company will manufacture "Hello Kitty ROBO" by taking advantage of the know-how gained through manufacturing "ifbot," as well as their weight-saving, high-quality, low-cost, and short development cycle know-how obtained through experience of manufacturing auto parts and business equipment parts.
