NEC and NEC System Technologies Releases Software Platform for Efficient Development of Robots |
Osaka, Japan -May 19, 2003-NEC and NEC System Technologies announced today that they have entered into robot solutions business, utilizing NEC's robot technologies and know-how. NEC System Technologies has licensed robot software technologies from NEC and starts marketing "RoboStudio," a robot software platform today. "RoboStudio" enables efficient development of "partner-type personal robots" that offer help to people and are fun to be with. NEC System Technologies is the first company to commercialize the robot software platform.
NEC has also improved its personal robot "PaPeRo," designed to become a member of a family, based on feedbacks from 100 households, which monitored the robots. Improved recognition performance is achieved through new "detection-based feedback" technology, while "behavior model" contributes to expressing robot's own character through consistent behavior.

Release of "RoboStudio" Robot Software Platform
"RoboStudio" is a robot software platform consisting of a basic robot software, application development tools and others. In addition to the software platform, NEC System Technologies offers robot development/research consulting and development outsourcing services to enable companies and universities to develop and commercialize "partner-type personal robots" at low cost within a short amount of time.

New Version of PaPeRo Personal Robot
NEC and NEC System Technologies improved PaPeRo "partner-type personal robot" which is designed to become a member of a family in a ubiquitous society. They have addressed and solved the problems identified in evaluations by monitors with the following newly developed technologies.

In recent years, number of companies and universities have actively been conduting research and development of robots which provide partnership and assistance to people, including pet-type robots and man-type robots, and the robot market is expected to deveop further.
