With support from the New Energy and Industrial Development Organization (NEDO), NEC System Technologies and Mie University jointly announced in July 2006 the development of a Health and Food Advice Robot (Tasting Robot). The Tasting Robot is capable of identifying several types of food, including cheese, meat products and bread by means of transmitting infrared rays at the food and then analyzing the absorbance spectrum.
The Sommelier Robot is a functionally enhanced version of the Tasting Robot. It can identify more than a dozen brands and flavors of wine, which are even more difficult to identify than cheese, meat and bread. This ability is made possible by enhancing the sensor's analysis precision.
Using information technology to help duplicate the five senses of humans, including the sense of taste, is important for the advancement of a ubiquitous society. NEC System Technologies will work with various entities in the development of robots that support the prevention of lifestyle-related diseases, as well as the treatment of those diseases through dietary therapy. We will also work to develop the robot's elemental technology while considering the commercialization of such technology to be utilized in other spheres in the future.
